We all have seen our pooch panting fast on a hot day. That is because it is the way that dogs cool themselves. Here are some ideas for how you can help your dog stay cool as the temperature rises.
During the hottest part of the day, do not go outside
When it gets very warm outside, if you have air conditioning inside then it would be the best thing for your dog to stay there. If you do not have air conditioning, you could use a fan to help with the heat inside your home too.
Try to time your outside exposure to the cooler parts of the day depending on your weather where you live.
Shade
You can always use the shade from trees but remember that as the sun moves, so too will the shade from the tree. If you do not have access to trees in your area, you can always use other items that provide shade such as a building, umbrellas, and sun tents.
Find a cool spot for your dog to lie down
Dogs love to lie in a cool spot when it is hot! You often will find your furry friend on a tiled floor or in the lawn outside.
Ensure fresh water is available
When the temperature rises, it is important to ensure that your dog has water available for drinking. Always check the water daily and try to position it out of the sun. Also, many dogs love to lick ice cubes when it is warm outside.
Dogs sweat too
As mentioned previously, dogs pant to cool themselves down with their respiratory system. Additionally, you can wet your dog’s fur with cool water to refresh them from the heat.
With advanced planning, you and your dog will weather the hotter weather comfortably!
