Drew Smith wanted to adopt a Golden Retriever from the animal shelter. But when he saw Carl, a 2-year old spaniel-mix, he instantly felt a connection and knew he had to bring him home. His decision to adopt him proved to be a good one when he rescued him from a fire that smoldered in the walls of his apartment three months later.
Dogs have remarkable senses of smell and hearing, which allow them to recognize the clues to any form of danger. Once they realize that there’s danger ahead, they immediately react by barking persistently. And that’s what Carl did when he sensed a fire creeping inside the walls of Drew’s apartment.
But Drew did not pay Carl’s persistent barking much attention. Although he was surprised to hear him barking and see him acting strangely, he could not figure out what’s going on and went straight to bed. But a few hours later, he woke up to find a distressed Carl – barking and licking him as if making sure he won’t go back to bed.
Drew tried to ignore Carl’s frantic behavior. But when he saw his room full of smoke, he finally got what Carl wanted to say. They both got into safety before the alarm even went off.
Carl did a great job of alerting Drew. He did not only help keep Drew and everyone in the apartment complex safe but also prevent severe damage to his apartment.
Drew never thought that the dog he rescued would one day save his life in return. He could not imagine the worst thing that could have happened if Carl was not around to wake him up before the smoke got worse.
Carl may not be Drew’s first choice, but he was his best and perfect choice.
